Connecting Cheshire's superfast broadband project is a large build of fibre broadband infrastructure. By the end of 2015, at least 96% of Cheshire will have access to high speed fibre broadband services, that's thousands of premises throughout the county.
The project is of significant benefit to those Cheshire premises which currently receive downstream speeds of less than 2Mbps. Ofcom believes that around 10% of premises in Cheshire currently receive less that 2Mbps but that percentage will plummet to virtually zero as the project ensures they benefit from faster speeds too.
Connecting Cheshire is not just about technology. The programme also includes social and digital inclusion activities and an extensive 'Business Support' initiative, designed to help small and medium size businesses get the most from fibre broadband and be more competitive.
A recently produced ‘value and impact study’ predicts that over 15 years, superfast broadband covering Cheshire, Warrington and Halton could generate:
- £1.3 billion in business benefits
- Over 11,000 new jobs
- £380 million in household benefits
- 3,000 new jobs in rural and semi-rural areas
We also have some background documents if you would like some detailed information about the project.
